Importing files with AI and creating Tags and Drawings in their respective libraries in one step through Artificial Intelligence

Import Tags & Drawings with AI

You can upload drawing files to the AI interface in WeldTrace and the drawings will be read and the data extracted through the AI process. The extracted data will be presented to you for verification and correction. You may also add any missing data, and the data and files will be uploaded together. This turns the process of extracting data from the drawings, adding or importing the data into WeldTrace, and renaming and uploading the files through the bulk file upload process into a single step.

The AI process also finds the welds on each drawing and reads its bill of materials (BOM) and cut list. The welds the AI finds are not created straight away: they go to AI Weld Review, where you check them and create them with their bubbles already on the weld map. This is called auto weld mapping. The BOM and cut list are saved with the drawing.

Upload the Drawing Files

Tags list - AI button

  1. Click here to open the AI interface. This button is disabled if your subscription plan does not support AI. The same button is also on the Drawings list page.

The AI button shows the number of jobs (not the number of drawings) in progress. When the jobs are completed, the count turns green.

Upload the drawing files

  1. Click here to browse and select the drawing files. Each file can have up to 5 pages;
  2. Once the files are selected, they are checked for the file size, file format and number of pages to determine if they are acceptable. You will see the message here if the files are valid;
  3. Click here to upload the files and process them through AI.

Check the Status of the AI Job

Check the status of the AI job

The AI process runs in the background and can take several minutes for each drawing. You will be sent an email when it is complete.

  1. Below the dotted line you will see the status of the job. The status shows "Extracting" while the AI is working and "Completed" when it is done;
  2. Click on the highlighted text to view the data that has been extracted;
  3. When you click on the accordion button, you will see who uploaded the files, the file names, their sizes and the number of pages.

You can click on the Browse button and add more files. Each job will be listed separately.

Check the Extracted Data

Check the extracted data

Check the extracted data - tag fields

The data extracted from each drawing is listed in a row. Check the data and correct it, or add any missing data, before you save.

  1. All drawings with AI extracted welds must be reviewed before the welds are created. Saving this page does not create welds (see Auto Weld Mapping below);
  2. The number of welds the AI found on each drawing;
  3. The number of BOM items found. Tick the box to save them with the drawing (see Bill of Materials below);
  4. The number of cut pieces found. Tick the box to save them with the drawing (see Cut List below);
  5. The drawing numbers extracted from the files;
  6. The Date, Revision, Title, Service, Area and Criteria were found and extracted from the title block. The fields marked * are required, and WeldTrace highlights missing or incorrect data in red. Scroll right to see the rest of the fields.
  1. The Tag number was found and extracted. If the tag does not exist in the project, it is created when you save;
  2. The Line number and Line Class were found and extracted. The Tag Title and Equipment number are also extracted when the drawing has them;
  3. If the drawings do not contain the VI and NDE data, the project settings for these fields are applied;
  4. A summary of what will be saved: the BOM items and cut pieces you ticked, and the AI welds that will go to AI Weld Review;
  5. Click here to save.

Data and Files Uploaded

Tags created through the AI process

  1. The Tags extracted are listed in the Tags list page;
  2. While the AI welds of a tag's drawings are in review, the tag shows "AI review" with the number of drawings. Click it to open AI Weld Review;
  3. The number of drawings of each tag;
  4. Click "AI Review" to open the AI Weld Review list. The number shows how many drawings are waiting for review;
  5. After the welds have been reviewed and created, a purple "AI" mark shows that the tag's welds came from AI extraction.

Use "Welds From" to list only the tags whose welds came from AI extraction or from a manual weld map.

Drawings created through the AI process

  1. The Drawings extracted are listed in the Drawings list page, and the files are also uploaded;
  2. While its AI welds are in review, the Info column shows "AI review: awaiting" instead of the weld map buttons. Click it to open the review;
  3. The Tags the Drawings are associated with are also listed.

Auto Weld Mapping

AI Weld Review

The welds the AI finds go to AI Weld Review. WeldTrace first finds the position of each weld on the drawing, which usually takes a minute or two. Open the drawing from the AI Weld Review list and check the welds: move a weld that is in the wrong place, add a weld the AI missed and reject anything that is not a weld. Then click "Create Welds". The welds are created at the positions you reviewed, and their bubbles are placed on the weld map, so you do not need to map them by hand.

Please read the article "Auto Weld Mapping & Review" for the review screen and each step of the review. Automatic weld mapping with AI

Bill of Materials

The AI reads the bill of materials of each drawing: the item number, description, size and quantity of each item. Tick "Extract BOM" on the extracted data page (see above) to save it with the drawing.

Bill of materials in AI Weld Review

In AI Weld Review, the BOM is shown below the drawing.

  1. Click "BOM items" to show where the BOM items are on the drawing. The button is greyed out when the AI could not locate the items on the drawing, as in this example;
  2. Pick a weld on the drawing or in the welds list;
  3. The bill of materials, with each item's description, size and quantity;
  4. The BOM items the picked weld joins are highlighted. In this example weld 2 joins the pipe (item 1) and a collar (item 3).

Bill of materials on the drawing details page

The BOM is also shown on the drawing's details page.

  1. "Bill Of Materials (AI Extract)" lists each item with its description, size and quantity;
  2. Click "BOM" to export the bill of materials as a CSV file.

The "BOM" button on the Drawings list page exports the BOM of all the drawings in the project.

Cut List

The AI also reads the cut list (cutting list) of each drawing: the pieces of pipe to cut, with their BOM item, size, run length and quantity. Tick "Extract Cut List" on the extracted data page to save it with the drawing.

Cut list in AI Weld Review

In AI Weld Review, the cut list is shown below the drawing.

  1. Click "Cut List items" to show where the cut pieces are on the drawing;
  2. Click a mark on the drawing to see the piece's details: its run length, where it runs from and to, its size and quantity, and where the AI read it;
  3. The cut list, with each piece's BOM item, size, run length and quantity;
  4. "Run (WP)" is the length of the run from work point to work point;
  5. Click "Show" to find a piece on the drawing.

Cutting list on the drawing details page

The cut list is also shown on the drawing's details page.

  1. "Cutting List (AI Extract)" lists each piece to cut;
  2. Click "Cut List" to export the cutting list as a CSV file;
  3. Click the arrow at the start of a row to see the piece's ends, its source and any note.

The "Cut List" button on the Drawings list page exports the cutting list of all the drawings in the project.
