Managing Orphaned Welds with the ORPH Test Pack

Managing Orphaned Welds with the ORPH Test Pack

Overview

In WeldTrace, maintaining a precise and unbroken history of non-destructive examination (NDE) and testing data is critical for compliance and project tracking.

Previously, when a weld with active or requested test data was removed from a test pack, the test details remained attached to the weld, but the weld lost its test pack visibility. This made it difficult for users to locate, select, or correct the data—leading to the common question: "Where did the weld go?"

To solve this, WeldTrace introduces the ORPH (Orphan) pack. The ORPH pack is a system-reserved repository designed to hold welds that still carry NDE/test workflow data after being removed from a standard test pack. This ensure complete visibility, controlled access, and a clear audit trail for test-pack modifications.

Key Behaviors and Rules

The ORPH pack operates automatically behind the scenes based on specific project workflows:

  • Automatic Creation: The system automatically generates the ORPH pack on a per-project basis the moment a weld qualifies for it. No manual setup is required.

  • Automatic Routing: If a weld has active or requested test data and is removed from a standard test pack, it is immediately moved to the project's ORPH pack.

  • Visibility & Links: The ORPH designation appears as the weld’s test pack reference. You can click this reference on the weld detail page to view the orphan context.

  • Re-assignment: Welds residing in the ORPH pack remain available in the system pool. You can select them normally when adding welds to a new, active test pack.

  • Seamless Transfer: Once a weld is added to a real test pack, it automatically leaves the ORPH pack, and the transition is logged in the system history.

Workflow Restrictions and Corrections

Because the ORPH pack is a holding area and not an active testing container, standard operations are restricted to protect data integrity.

Standard Workflows Blocked

Regular Enter Results and Revise workflows are strictly blocked for any welds currently residing in the ORPH pack.

Data Corrections for Administrators

To resolve data entry mistakes or incorrect NDE claims without forcing users to completely delete and re-add welds, Administrators and Project Administrators can utilize specialized correction tools:

Orphaned welds in NDE packs
  1. The "Enter Results" button will be disabled in the ORPH pack;
  2. The "Revise" button will be disabled in the ORPH pack;
  3. Administrators can edit the welds in the ORPH pack through this button. See below on how to edit welds' test data;
Editing test data for orphaned welds
  1. Each row of data will have an edit button to edit the test data;
  2. The clear button will remove the test data, including the test results for the selected row;
  3. When you click on the edit button, you will see this section below where you can change the test result, test date and rest reports. If a previously failed weld were to be passed, you would need to manually delete the repair weld that is created automatically;
  4. A remark must be entered when test data is corrected through this interface;
  5. If a weld were failed, you will be able to pick the defects;
  6. Click here to save all the changes;

Auditing and History

Every action taken within the ORPH ecosystem is tracked to ensure full project accountability:

  • Any edit or deletion performed via the ORPH correction modal is permanently written to both the Weld History and the ORPH Pack History;

  • When a weld is successfully transferred from ORPH to a new test pack, the transfer event is logged automatically.
